The response was excellent. Everyone at the presentation was impressed, especially with the interior pictures and rooftop pans. We walked away with a silver award.

Nanaimo is ahead of most jurisdictions in having its heritage register on the web, and in having a public web 'window' into its GIS. The missing bit (in my opinion) has been the linking of heritage register records to locations on the map. Your 'Virtual Heritage Walk' project accomplishes this (for the downtown at least) and a whole lot more! I think it is the best example I've seen yet that illustrates how GIS and the WWW can be used to support a very interesting and engaging heritage interpretation technique.

VIRTUAL TOUR GARNERS AWARD FOR NANAIMO
The City of Nanaimo has won an Award of Honour for its "Virtual Heritage Walk".
For several years, Nanaimo has worked hard to make its website a useful and engaging service. In August of last year, the City hired Enviroscopics to assist in creating a virtual heritage walk. Completed in November, it has become one of the website's most popular features.
Complementing the City's existing on-line heritage building database, the virtual walking tour allows the viewer to explore historic downtown buildings in a 360 degree image setting. The user can navigate by using either a 2D map of the City's downtown core, or entering one of six 360 degree image nodes placed at strategic street intersections. Heritage buildings can therefore be viewed in context. Visitors can also directly access information such as construction date, architectural style and the heritage value statement.
Not content to sit on their laurels, Nanaimo will continue to enhance the site with additional nodes.

Love the shots and all the work it took to get the dynamic range for some of the indoor images. The heritage tour is nothing short of stunning. I am totally impressed!
Great shots of Nanaimo... MacMillan Park wow cool ... way cool.
It's great to see someone locally producing world class images!
